Grazing Lunar Occultation 7th March 2006
At 18h 53m 56s UT on the 7th March there will be a grazing lunar occulation of the star SAO77625, visible from the Stirling area.

Occultations of stars by the Moon are fairly common, but grazing occultations are much rarer, and usually only visible from a small part of the Earth's surface

Precise timings can be used to measure the profiles of surface features on the Moon's limb.

The event will be visible along a line passing through Kings Park in Stirling: N 56.12005 W 03.95157 Map

Crescent Moon 2nd March
This is a good time of year to glimpse the New Moon, as the ecliptic is inclined steeply to the horizon at sunset. This shot of the three-day old Moon was taken by the Evening Class on Thursday night:

Note the four craters Langrenus, Vendelinus, Petavius and Furnerius in a row towards the bottom of the image.
