Sundogs from Canada
Many thanks to Beverly Cousins from Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada, for submitting these pictures of
sundogs taken by her sister Letia.
The photos were taken at Iqaluit, on Baffin Island, overlooking Frobisher Bay. Sundogs are formed by sunlight refracted through ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere. Letia tells us that the
Inuktitut words for sundog are:
ajakuti: like a crutch holding the sun up so it doesn't roll away
sukaujaq: rainbow
paaqtauja: looks like the sticks that are used to stretch out and dry animal skins
