Not to be missed ! -- Comet 17P/Holmes

Comet Holmes continues to be visible to the naked eye in Perseus



In this image, taken by Janet Simpson on 08 Nov 2007, the expanding head of the comet can be seen to be developing a stubby tail to the lower right.

Celestial Events in November

  • 5th: Maximum of the Southern Taurids meteor shower
  • 8th: Mercury at greatest western elongation
  • 11th: Ceres reaches opposition with a magnitude of +7.2
  • 12th: Maximum of the Northern Taurids meteor shower
  • 18th: Maximum of Leonids meteor shower
  • 26th: Comet 8P/Tuttle brightens to an estimated magnitude of +10
  • 29th: Moon passes through northern parts of the Beehive Cluster

As the nights continue to draw in, we are now well into our autumn season. The next meeting will be at the Smith Institute on Friday 9th November, at 7:30 pm. All welcome.

Next Evening Class: Thursday 6th December. Classes take place in the Highland Hotel on the first Thursday of the month, at 7:00 pm.
